One of Braun’s more elusive releases, the Braun Series 8, came out in 2019 to everyone’s surprise. While it may be intuitive (and logical) to assume that the Series 8 came after the Series 7 and before the Series 9, this was not actually the case.
It seems that the brains at Braun developed the Series 8 in an attempt to combine some of the better parts of the Braun Series 5, 7, and 9 to create this razor.
We definitely weren’t mad about this–Braun has consistently put out good products on the market and we were pretty eager to dive into what makes this different, even with the weird numbering
Now there is plenty about this razor that makes it special and unique against other razors. You may be a Braun man or maybe have been sticking with another manufacturer (or even non-electric razors) for a while.
That’s totally understandable. But while we understand that men are loyal to their razor brands, nevertheless we still decided to do a thorough review of this product. The elusiveness alone makes it worth a deep-dive, as an even number in a series of odd numbers, and after all, new is always better.

When it comes to premium electric razors, you really can’t go wrong with a brand like Braun.
Braun is a German consumer products company that’s headquartered in Kronberg, Germany but operates and services customers and companies around the world.
In addition to razors and the general shaving and grooming category, it also makes a variety of household products such as oral care (e.g. toothbrushes), beauty care (e.g. hair and epilation), health and wellness (e.g. blood pressure monitors), kitchen appliances (e.g. toasters and coffee makers), irons, and clocks, watches, and calculators.
While this may seem like a lot, Braun definitely lives up to the hype of German engineering. They’re able to focus on all these while still consistently turning out good, high quality products.
Now in terms of the Braun Series 8, and electric razors in general, you have to change your mindset when it comes to expensive, quality items.

Upkeeping regular razors usually means taking out your razor head and washing it yourself under the sink. It can be a tedious process that requires patience and time, but if there isn’t consistency then it can mean trouble in the hygiene department.
Trust me when I say that the last thing I want to be thinking about in the morning, after we shave, is then cleaning the razor itself. At that point I’m in a rush to be out the door, or to have a cup of coffee in my hand at the very least.
So I’m always thinking critically about how easy it is to maintain a product. If you’re the same, then you will be glad to hear that the Braun brand has released cleaning and charging stations with their premium razors, starting with the Braun Series 6.
But how well do these cleaning and charging stations actually work? Now the best thing about these stations is their ability to do two things at once. Past models have had charging stations, but cleaning and charging stations have been developed and updated alongside their razor counterparts.
The station plugs into the wall, so it is important to be mindful of the counter space that it will inevitably take up. It is also fairly easy to use and set up, only needing to be plugged in and loaded with a cleaning solution that comes in the form of a cartridge.
After that, all you will need to do is simply dock your razor with the head down and into the station. Then, press the big power button and it will clean your razor whilst charging it at the same time, no problem.
The simplicity of it is the best part and the convenience over time is worth the expense, in our opinion. Even if you are someone who takes the time to clean his razor every day, it is not likely that you can do a better job at this automatic cleaning station.
It is definitely a quicker process, and because razors come so close to your face, hygiene and safety is not something you want to be compromising on. Let’s dive a little bit more into the cleaning and charging station. There’s hardly a point to a fancy cleaning and charging station if the razor can barely hold the charge. Luckily, this is not the case with the Braun Series 8.
The product boasts that after one full charge, the razor could hold the charge for a whole month. One whole month! On our end, we found that the Braun Series 8 offers a ten-minute increase of shaving time compared to older models.
This brings the total amount of runtime to 60 minutes. Though, ten minutes may not seem like a lot, there is a difference to the shaving experience when you have that extra time to be more detailed or particular.
And this will differ by person too, how long the razor lasts. Consider how long you actually spend shaving in the mornings, and whether you do it every day. Now take the 60 minute run time and think about how long that would actually last you.
It may be the case that it’s shorter than a month or somewhat longer, but on average this is a solid razor that can hold the charge for quite some time. Now, let’s say that it’s been a hectic week and you haven’t gotten around to recharging your razor.
When morning comes, you realize you need a quick shave but, lo and behold your razor is dead. It sounds like a morning that too many of us have experienced. Luckily, it is apparently that the people behind the Braun Series 8 have experienced this and are keen on avoiding a repeat.
The razor comes with a 5 minute quick charge function that allows you to boot it up really fast, allowing you to get that quick shave in to get any overgrowth. That gives you just enough time to brew a cup of coffee or maybe get dressed before you head back to the bathroom to take care of that shave.
Of course, you’ll need to plug the razor back in the station to give it a nice, full charge for the next day. Nonetheless, it’s a relief to know that when it comes down to the wire, this razor will have your back.

Everyone has a slightly different face shape, and the best type of razors will be able to shape towards the contours of your face and offer close shaves, without making you suffer the extra cost that comes with pesky razor burn.
So what does that mean when it comes to buying a razor that is suitable for you? We’re talking about flexible razor heads, extra shaving elements, density shavers, and precision trimming.
Before we get into every feature that makes the Braun Series 8 a quality razor, we’ll list out all the details below.
8D flexible shaving head: These are the main qualities about the Braun Series 8. The 8D shaving head lock is engaged with just the touch of the power button, unlike past models that didn’t have any head lock features, making this a safer and more reliable model.
Its flexibility is able to shave the difficult contours of your chin and neck while giving a shave as close as possible. I found that this delivers a great, close shave that is definitely comparable to some of the more expensive razors on the market that I have tried before.
The shaving head is really flexible and I did not need to move my arm and wrist around as much to avoid getting razor burn–the Series 8 naturally moved around and contoured to the shape of my face, which was exactly what I needed.
30,000 cycles per minute (CPM) motor: This sounds somewhat fancy, but the 30,000 CPM motor simply means that each shaving element is actually moving at 10,000 cycles per minute.
Since there are 3 shaving elements working together in the Series 8, Braun decided to advertise it as 30,000. Each shaving element works together to give you that close shave, along with the 8D flexible shaving head.
It’s still a great feature, but be assured that every model, new and old, that has 3 shaving elements would encompass this and have this kind of cutting edge technology.
Advanced 32-bit MCU chip: The advanced 32-bit MCU chip is the technology that lives inside the razor actually powering the beard density sensor technology. It works by sensing the thickness and length of your facial hair, and then adjusting the power output of the motors accordingly.
This is a great example of Braun’s modern razor technology and is a testament to the reason for the expensive price.
Opti-foil blades: Now, the shaving elements inside the razor head embody a unique design. Braun uses their trademarked Opti-foil design which just means that instead of a round shape that is utilized, they shape it irregularly to be able to catch any type of hair.
The two outer foils shave the hair and bring any longer hairs inwardly to be cut by the middle trimmer. The slit there is much wider therefore it’s able to capture those stubborn flat-lying hairs.
Now I definitely thought that I was able to get a close shave, and since I’m not actually able to determine what part of the electric shaver contributes to that I just have to assume that these opti-foil blades do their part in making this a great razor.
Beard density electricity shaver: This is exactly what it sounds like; the razor can sense, with the advanced 32-bit MCU chip, how dense your facial hair is and make adjustments accordingly so that the razor is running at precisely the right speed.
I thought it was a great piece of technology that gave me one less thing to think about as I was working the razor on my face. In my mind, I’m comparing it to an automatic versus a manual car.
When you’re driving an automatic, you don’t have to think about switching gears as you start climbing a hill or zipping down one. That gives you one less thing to focus on, but it also means you have less personal control over how your car is operating.
On the other hand, you get the exact feel of the road and are extremely engaged when you’re operating stick shift, but then you have to work a bit harder and be totally present when you’re driving.
That’s how I feel about the beard density shaver. It feels like driving an automatic car. If you’re someone who just wants a one-stop shop for all your products then this is the way to go, but if you’re someone who prefers the art of shaving then maybe this feature is not the best one to hone in on as you’re thinking about making a purchasing decision.
Pop-up precision trimmer: The pop-up precision trimmer is available on the back of the razor. This is for hairs that are either too long for the Opti-foils or the hard to reach places like between your neck and chin.
As well as anywhere two hair grains tend to meet. To access the trimmer you press a button to release it forward. The action of sliding is smooth and with the spring technology, it should easily snap back into place.
Be sure to press the release button, therefore when you press the power button, it will be able to activate the trimmer as well. Luckily, snapping the trimmer back into place won’t scrape the blades of the razor together.
The unfortunate part about the trimmer is its placement. Due to this, it involves some awkward wrist movement. Also, be careful about snapping it back into place, because pinched skin isn’t a deal breaker, but it is very frustrating.
Given the lack of awkward wrist movement required when I’m actually shaving I thought this was only a minor setback, but it’s something to consider.

The feel and shape of the razor is important for the ergonomics and comfortability of using something for an extended period of time. Given the price, it is good to know if the razor is manufactured with quality material.
In terms of the design, the Braun Series 8 is available only in a silver and black color with accents of blue. It is a bit disappointing to find out that the body of the razor is covered in plastic, but we assume this is because they wanted to provide a light-weight razor.
Past Braun models are usually chrome coated, but the silver matte finish on the Series 8 helps to combat stains and smudging. Plastic also makes it a lot easier for you to clean and maintain, so if you’re not super worried about something feeling expensive (which I definitely am not) then this is not a setback by any means.
The front display of the razor is in a glossy, black exterior. It will have the power button, the head locking switch, and an LED display to indicate battery levels. Though it may seem simple for a premium razor, it is effective.
The LED display is clear and easy to read and I didn’t have any issues interpreting what was on it. It’s super user friendly and uncomplicated in the best way.
In addition, the Braun Series 8 incorporates waterproof technology, which means that you can also shave in the shower and take out two birds with one stone. There is no need to worry about any slippage from your hand because the sides of the razor are coated in a rubber like texture that is meant to ensure a handy grip.
There is also a nice resting spot for your thumb so that it fits in your hand nicely. The rubber grip is also extended to the back of the razor to ensure a good grip all around.
One thing to note is that I’m right-handed, and I believe this is intended for both leftys and rights but I’m not sure if there would be a difference in thumb placement or anything.
I did try to hold the razor in my left hand and it felt fine, but something to think about for those out there who have trouble buying scissors sometimes. All in all, the design is only slightly different than older models such as the Series 5 and Series 7.
Braun is known for being consistent with incorporating the best parts about past models while adding any new razor technology that they can. While also fixing any problems of the past models.
We do appreciate that they established a travel lock on this razor that some past models didn’t inhabit as well as a more useful and instinctive battery display. To activate the travel lock mechanism, just hold the power button down for about 3 seconds and a red padlock will appear on the LED display letting you know that the lock is in place.

Sometimes when you purchase something online or even something boxed in the store, it can be unclear what exactly you’re getting. There is often misleading product placement or pictures online or on the box that actually then are not part of the actual product.

As you can see, there isn’t much that will come with your Braun Series 8, although this is exactly what I was expecting when I opened my box.

So even though the difference between a Series 7 and a Series 8 is just one number, the technology improvements that come with a new product far surpasses what you might expect with just one numerical change in the product name.
That said, of course, when it comes down to it, the features and qualities of the razor have to be in line with your preferences.
But hopefully listing them all out here has helped you come to a decision on whether the price point seems worth it for the quality of the razor.
